It's a new year, 2012, so I figured it was time to start with another round of trying to guess the outcomes of Big 12 basketball games based on the spread put out by Vegas. Just like I did last year, I will give the game and its spread and then I will make my prediction.
Just like last season I will keep a running log of my record in picking the games against the spread. I started this practice thinking it would provide some good entertainment for people who could go and maybe see that someone else wasn't good at picking games either. Fortunately last season I finished with a winning record so that is my goal once again.
I missed a few of the opening games in conference play but we will start with the first edition of the Sunflower Showdown in 2012.
So down below are the games, their spreads and my predictions. Results article will happen following all the contests with my cumulative record as well, no matter how bad it turns out. Please feel free to make any comment you want on how you think the games will turn out in relation to the spread or how you feel about my choices.
Please note the spreads I use come from the website www.vegasinsider.com and I try to use the most common spread listed amongst the different sports books assuming there is a variance.
MY RECORD AGAINST SPREAD THIS SEASON: 0-0
#22 Kansas State Wildcats at #15 Kansas Jayhawks - Kansas is a 8.5 point favorite
Wednesday - 7:00 P.M Central
MY PREDICTION: Even though the Wildcats have been playing their best basketball of the season lately, Allen Fieldhouse has been a house of horrors for Frank Martin and his squads. Now as everyone surely has heard and knows this isn't the same KU team as previous years but they are still pretty dangerous and they likely will be looking to make a statement in the conference opener against one of their rivals. My guess is the Jayhawks ride the early energy to take a lead and never look back as they beat the Wildcats and cover the spread in the process.
Texas Tech Red Raiders at Oklahoma State Cowboys - OSU favored by 13 points
Wednesday - 7:00 P.M Central
MY PREDICTION: While I in no way feel comfortable picking the Red Raiders on the road in conference that is what my gut is telling me. The Cowboys should still be the better team but with the injury to J.P. Olukemi and everything going on with this program there is simply no way I can pick them to cover by double digits against a Billy Gillispie coached team. The pick is Jordan Tolbert and the Red Raiders to probably still lose the game but now allow the Pokes to cover.
Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones - Longhorns favored by 1 point
Wednesday - 8:00 P.M Central
MY PREDICTION: A battle of two 10-3 squads with a lot of question marks still to be answered this year. In this game the Cyclones should have Royce White back at full strength as he had battled some illness issues that kept him mostly out of the Clones last game. I think the home court advantage combined with an experienced group of players looking to make a name for themselves will be enough to propel Iowa State past a young Longhorn squad.
