Just today Seth Davis of CBS Sports announced via his twitter account (@SethDavisHoops) that Oklahoma has fired head coach Jeff Capel.
Capel came to Oklahoma in 2006 after a successful run at Virginia Commonwealth. The Sooners this season went 14-18 which included an embarrassing loss at the hands of division two team Chaminade.
The Sooners best season under Capel came in the 2008-2009 season when OU started the year 25-1 and eventually earned a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Once Blake Griffin departed the program the Sooners have not been able to regain their previous level of success.
The 09-10 campaign was supposed to be a strong one for Capel and the Sooners they had Willie Warren returning and a strong recruiting class led by Tommy Mason-Griffin and Tiny Gallon. Instead the team finished 13-18 and after the season the majority of the team left the program.
The decision by OU to fire Capel is a costly one. In 2009, the school rewarded him with a 7 year extension. When all the financial information and other details emerge we will update this developing story.
