Previewing Saturday's Big 12 Basketball Games

New, 1 comment

Not to too my own horn, but I correctly picked all 6 mid-week games, and last weekend went 5 of 6, only missing the OU-Ok State game, which I forecasted before I knew of Willie Warren and Tiny Gallon's absences. (Well I guess that does deserve a TOOT TOOT).

(22) Baylor at Oklahoma St - 12:30p CST ESPN 360
The most intriguing match-up of the weekend is the first to tip off. Both these teams are slated to be tourney teams. Both have superstar players, although I think the Cowboys' James Anderson is the best player in the league. The difference in this one is that Baylor has studs at both the frontcourt and backcourt positions. Anderson may be 6 inches taller than Baylor's Tweety Carter, but if he can get by him he faces an intimidating wall of LaceDarius Dunn and Ekpe Udoh. Anderson will carry OK State, but not enough appease the home crowd as Baylor wins a tough one.

(17) Texas at Texas Tech - 1pm CST ESPN
Who will we see in Lubbock? The Dr Jekyll who put a 40 point waxing on bottom dweller Nebraska, or the Mr Hyde who got spanked in Columbia? Tech is a decent team, but reports of a John Roberson injury, even a non-serious one that affects the Tech star the slightest, will have a tremendous impact on the Red Raiders. The Horns hook Tech going away int eh second half.

Colorado at (1) Kansas - 3pm CST ESPN 360
CU took Kansas to OT in a thriller earlier this month without superstar guard Alec Burks. But even with a healthy Burks in the line-up, the inexperienced Buffs will get herded in front of a raucous Larry Town crowd. I guess it is a case of subtraction by addition.

(23) Texas A&M at Iowa St - 3pm CST ESPN 360
A&M had all the momentum in the world coming into the week, until it faced top-ranked Kansas and blew a late lead. One might think their confidence would be a little rattled, if you didn't understand how good of a coach Mark Turgeon is. He will get his players up and Donald Sloan will continue to prove why he is one of the best in the conference as he puts up 20 and A&M wins in Ames.

Missouri at Nebraska - 5pm CST ESPN 360
The last time these two teams met, in Columbia, Mizzou played arguably its worst game of the season. They shot sub 40% from the field. Sub 30% from 3. Didn't win the rebounding margin... and won by 17. The change in venue won't change the fact that Mizzou is a far superior team and they will roll over the Corn.

Let's play the "Flash Back Machine" game. Flash back to the start of conference play and tell me which of these teams you thought would be second in conference and which would be near the bottom? Well, while you might not have thought that K-State would be near the bottom, you most certainly would have thought that OU would be controlling its own destiny for second place. Well, welcome back to the future, where OU just lost to CU and is sitting in 10th in the latest Big 12 Hoops Conference Power Poll. The future remains the present as K-State blows past the Sooners in Norman.
