Big 12 Hoops Conference Call

New, 10 comments

Well football is winding down in college as we just have the bowl games left and this means that pretty soon college basketball will be dominating your television sets. The season is a few games which allows everyone some basis to argue how good or how bad certain teams are. In this discussion we touch on who we think has been disappointing so far and who our favorite athlete was growing up.

If you agree or disagree with us or have any general thoughts feel free to share.

(1.) Each Big 12 team is roughly about 8 or so games into the season. Which team do you think we know the most about so far and which team the least?

(2.) Way early but do you think any coaches in Big 12 are going to be fired following the season?

(3.) Which player has been most disappointing so far this season in the Big 12?

(4.) Maybe we've discussed before but I don't recall: Which side do you fall under? Pro-Lebron or Anti-Lebron with the Miami Heat?

(5.) Who was your favorite athlete, in any sport or level, growing up?

(1.) Each Big 12 team is roughly about 8 or so games into the season. Which team do you think we know the most about so far and which team the least?

MP: To be honest, I know almost nothing about how Texas Tech is playing.  I know they're losing, and I know people are blaming Pat Knight so far.  But I haven't gotten a chance to catch one of their games yet.  I'd say I am most in tune with Kansas and Texas (though you could argue that I don't know anything about Kansas, as I can't figure out what I think about this team yet).  I would like to know a little more about Baylor (i.e. they'd play some real games).  I've also watched K-State, Mizzou and Oklahoma a lot (more than I'd like of the Sooners so far).

EP: I think we know the most about Oklahoma, and they are flat out awful. We can almost chalk them up with the first pick in whatever draft the last place team gets. I know the least about Iowa State. Albeit they weren't playing anyone, but they did start 6-0 - which is WAY higher than I would have thought them to start. But have since come down to earth and have lost 2 straight. They could be a team that upsets a team or two. And trust me I NEVER thought I'd say that when the season began.

JL: I would have to agree that we know the most about the Sooners and that isn't a good thing. If I was being positive about them, I guess they have a lot of room to get better this year. For me the team I know the least about is Oklahoma State. I haven't only seen the game against Virginia Tech and they didn't impress me much, interested seeing them in conference this year.

(2.) Way early but do you think any coaches in Big 12 are going to be fired following the season?

MP: Hello Pat Knight.  I'm not sure he has much margin of error this season.  Unless Texas Tech feels a lot of pressure from Bob, I don't think the younger Knight stands a chance at keeping his job barring a NCAA or competitive NIT appearance.  I also think Doc Sadler may feel his seat warming up.  It will be interesting to see how complacent Nebraska's athletic department will be during their move to the Big 10.  Realistically, it could go either way.

EP: Gotta be Knight. Senior leadership and talent but nothing to show of it. He might as well put his house on the market.

JL: I guess this question would be the veritable softball thrown as far as questions go, little too easy.  Yes I would say Pat Knight is a goner, although I will say I really like listening to his interviews, refreshing to hear.

(3.) Which player has been most disappointing so far this season in the Big 12?

MP: It's sort of a tie between Jacob Pullen and Kim English.  I expected both to be major impact players, and neither has reached my expectations.  I fully expect both to find their strokes, but the question "when" remains.  K-State is far less dangerous when Pullen's shooting is sub par, and his foul shooting really needs to improve.  Missouri has gotten great production out of its backcourt so far this year, but they'll always take more.

EP: Kimmie was down to start the season, but has been at least a little  more active of late.  I'll go back to Tech and say Mike Singletary. For a guy who had some preseason hype 12 ppg is not sufficient. His 29 against Oral Roberts was followed by 6 in a loss to the Washington Huskies.

JL: Well I have two players and they are both on the same team: Jacob Pullen & Wally Judge. In Pullen's case he has been flat out awful on offense in a few games and in the biggest game of the year against Duke. He has been committing way too many stupid turnovers as well. Don't even know what to say about Judge, virtually no production this year in what some thought to be a breakout season. He may be the type of player who just can't ever thrive under pressure from Frank Martin or getting yanked every time he messes up.

(4.) Maybe we've discussed before but I don't recall: Which side do you fall under? Pro-Lebron or Anti-Lebron with the Miami Heat?

MP: I guess I'm sort of in between.  I was (and still am) fascinated with the idea of the Heat.  The idea of maxing out your team on studs and filling in the rest with mid-level exceptions is a recipe unheard of.  I'm really interested to see if the Heat can find a way to allow Lebron and Wade to coexist (and live up to their potential).  So far it looks like they've got some major holes, but I think they'll get better and better as the season progresses.  As for Lebron himself, I hated The Decision.  That said, I still really like him as a basketball player.  He's one of the most exciting players I've ever seen play, and I really want him to go down as an all-time great (instead of just all-time potential).  Everyone makes some mistakes, and he seems like an upstanding guy.

EP: I'm from Ohio, so I am obligated to say I'm anti LeBron. Even if I wasn't 100% anti-LeBron I'm 100% anti-Heat.  The fact that if the season ended today they'd be a 5 seed makes me sleep easier at night.

JL: Count me as a hater even though who can blame a 26 year old for taking millions of dollars to go to Miami and get out of Ohio (no offense to Ohio). Just because I understand doesn't mean I will cheer for him, I hated the Decision and was impressed with the Cleveland fans chants of "Akron Hates You" during his return. Even though I don't care for the Celtics I would like to see the Heat bow out to Boston in 4-5 games just to rub in what an actual team looks like.

(5.) Who was your favorite athlete, in any sport or level, growing up?

MP: Oh man, that's tough.  I loved Andruw Jones on the Braves when I was really young.  I'm not entirely sure why, but I thought it was cool how he spelled his name.  I was also convinced he would be the best centerfielder in history.  Actually, I was convinced he was the best (certainly on the fielding side of things).  I was crushed when he left the Braves, since I had convinced myself that he would be a lifetime Brave.  Now I'm thrilled he left (as his fielding and hitting have tanked), but there's still a little nostalgia there.  Jason Williams (the Duke player) was also one of my favorites.  His game against Maryland in 2001 (where he basically single-handedly came back from 10 down) is probably my favorite individual basketball performance ever (

EP: Evan didn't like nobody like Evan liked Rickey Henderson. From his performances on the field to the stories about him off of it, he was my hero. I had a goal to collect every Henderson card ever made, and was 100+ into it when I gave up trading baseball cards.  10 years later he was still playing.  Amazing.

JL: Well mine is the greatest QB of All Time: John Elway of the Denver Broncos. When I was growing up, Elway was carrying mediocre to bad teams to Super Bowls and getting pummeled while doing it. I couldn't stand the Montana is better than Elway because of Super Bowl titles argument, would have liked to seen how many years Montana would have survived playing with Elway's o-line and throwing to Ricky Nattiel & Mark Jackson instead of Jerry Rice & John Taylor.
