Must Watch Non-Con Games for 09-10 Season

San Antonio Express-News Big 12 writer Brent Zwerneman (who also covers the beat for the financially-strapped Houston Chronicle) lists his top Big 12 non-con games [for Texas schools...sorry OU, OSU, North).

Texas Tech vs. Washington

Dec. 3, United Spirit Arena

The Red Raiders play host to three Pac-10 teams this season, including the conference-champ Huskies. Tech coach Pat Knight will earn a chance early to show that he’s the right guy to lead this program — otherwise keep an eye out for former A&M and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie.

Texas A&M vs. New Mexico

Dec. 12, Houston’s Toyota Center

The Aggies lack the nonconference splash of the Longhorns, but A&M coach Mark Turgeon is wise to schedule an annual game in the heart of what should be his primary recruiting base.

Texas vs. North Carolina

Dec. 19, Cowboys Stadium

Jerry Jones’ new Arlington digs will play host to the Final Four in 2014. This glitzy matchup might offer a sneak preview — five years in advance.

Texas vs. Michigan State

Dec. 22, Erwin Center

The Longhorns welcome the Spartans in their next game after facing the defending champion Tar Heels. That means UT will play both of last year’s national title contenders in a span of three days.

Baylor vs. Massachusetts

Jan. 23, Ferrell Center

This game pits the two runners-up from the past two National Invitation Tournaments in a break from Big 12 action for the Bears. While last season’s run to the NIT title game offered a surprising thrill for Baylor fans, they now expect an annual NCAA tournament bid under coach Scott Drew.
