Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings - Week 9

Iowa State was the big mover this week after wins vs Texas and A&M. The bottom three remained the same, though Tech is slowly inching its way out of the cellar... maybe because other teams aren't performing more than Tech actually improving.

1. Baylor Bears

Overall Record: 15-0 (2-0 conference)
Last Week's Record: 1-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement:1, same
What Nathan Says: Second most talented team in college basketball in my mind. K-State's gonna give them all they can handle tonight.

2. Kansas Jayhawks

Overall Record: 12-3 (2-0)
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 3, up one spot
What Nathan Says: Travis Releford: get to know the name if you haven't already.

3. Missouri Tigers

Overall Record: 14-1 (1-1)
Last Week's Record: 1-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 2, down one spot
What Evan Says: Road games are tough, but shooting 32.7% from the field at K-State is inexcusable. Another tough roadie at ISU tomorrow before a pair of home games.

4. Kansas St. Wildcats

Overall Record: 12-2 (1-1)
Last Week's Record: 1-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 4, same
What Evan Says: Bounced back nicely after getting demolished in Lawrence. Their schedule doesn't get any easier tonight hosting Baylor before traveling to Norman... We'll know the real K-State after Saturday.

5. Iowa St. Cyclones

Overall Record: 12-3 (2-0)
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 7, up two spots
What Nathan Says: They were in the rankings' doghouse not too long ago. A win vs Mizzou would cement their return to relevancy.

6. Texas Longhorns

Overall Record: 11-4 (1-1)
Last Week's Record: 1-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 5, down one spot
What E. Carnes Says: Texas shot just 30% in Saturday's victory over OK State. After facing A&M, the Longhorns hit the road for Mizzou and K-State — where 30% definitely won't cut it.

7. Oklahoma Sooners

Overall Record: 10-5 (0-3)
Last Week's Record: 0-3
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 6, down one spot
What Evan Says: Admittedly I am upset at OU's play. They were my underdog darlings of the year... then they lose three straight to open conference play. Looks like I'm shopping for a new bandwagon to hop on...

8. Texas A&M Aggies

Overall Record: 9-5 (0-2)
Last Week's Record: 0-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 8, same
What E. Carnes Says: What is happening in College Station? The Aggies were playing better before the return of Khris Middleton.

9. Oklahoma St. Cowboys

Overall Record: 9-7 (2-1)
Last Week's Results: 2-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 9, same
What Evan Says: The win in Bedlam was a great boost heading into a run of @Baylor, @ISU, vs K-State, vs. Mizzou. They must win half those games to stay relevant in the conference.

10. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Overall Record: 7-7 (0-2)
Last Week's Record: 0-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 10, same
What E. Carnes Says:The Red Raiders are looking better every game. They held their own in their loss to Baylor, only trailing by one point at the half.

After Bedlam...

…I’d bump OSU up a place or two and OU down a place or two in my rankings (that will teach me to compile my rankings before the night’s games). I was ready to put OSU last in the Big 12 after seeing them at the Erwin Center on Saturday.

Both Texas and OU had terrible, terrible shooting nights against OSU, but Texas was able to grind out a win, which should make Longhorn fans feel better about the toughness of such a young team.

I was about to say...

OSU last? but glad you commented on that. well I’m glad OSU could pull out that win. I really think the pokes are starting to work together a lot more. I’m obviously an OSU fan but this is a team that doesn’t have all the pieces but they’re doing better with what they have now. Pokes D is looking good, they’re working together and LeBryan is actually playing D now and not crying when he gets a foul or doesn’t get a whistle. I think people are forgetting the strength of schedule that the pokes have played, I know we should win some of those games (Virginia Tech both times to be exact) but that Missouri State win is getting thrown under the rug. Missouri State is a solid team that dominated second half at Creighton. But I don’t think this OK State defense is just teams having a bad night, I really think they’re playing some solid d. alright off the soap box. here’s what my rankings look like.

1. Baylor
2. Kansas
3. Mizzou
4. K-State
5. Iowa State
6. Texas
7. Oklahoma State
8. Oklahoma
9. Texas Tech
10. Texas A&M

I think OU really fooled some people with all the gimme wins in non-conference.

I Mostly Agree with your picks...

The Baylor win over KSU in in the Octogon was huge and I think really legitimizes Baylor as a favorite to win the conference. This is not last year’s Baylor team.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the MU @ ISU game is also huge for defining both of those teams? To me it seems like the winner will likely be a contender and the loser will likely be headed for the middle of the pack. Am I reading too much into it?

Maybe I’m just a little too excited to finally be watching conference games. I absolutely love the full home & home schedule this year. Reminds me of the old Big 8 days when winning the conference was really a major accomplishment.

I feel the same way

Iowa St. can make up for the Michigan loss tonight & Baylor is the best team in CBB not named Kentucky
