Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings - Week 6

A slow finals week capped by an action packed weekend that led to some movement in the polls. Did we see the real A&M, Baylor, KU and Iowa State squads, or were they just off after the long study break? And I'm not going to lie, because of how some of these teams played over the past 7 days, this was the most difficult week to do Power Rankings.

Disagree with us? Put your rankings in the comments section.

1. Missouri Tigers

Overall Record: 11-0
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T1, same
What Evan Says: To quote my friend Snake, "ok finally the one game that marks the time to start paying attention!" Mizzou-Illinois on Thursday.

T2. Baylor Bears

Overall Record: 10-0
Last Week's Record: 3-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T1, down one spot
What Nathan Says: The Bears showed #1 seed potential winning at BYU. Stamina will be tested with the next three games in nine days, including a date with a much-improved Mississippi State team.

T2. Kansas Jayhawks

Overall Record: 7-3
Last Week's Record: 0-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 3, up one spot
What Nathan Says: Not a good look losing to Davidson in KC but they also led at the half in their game at Duke. Sort of an OK loss.

4. Texas Longhorns

Overall Record: 9-2
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: , up one spot
What E. Carnes Says: The rapidly-improving Longhorns are coming off a huge win over Temple. They'll need all the momentum they can get as they head to Chapel Hill on Wednesday.

T5. Texas A&M Aggies

Overall Record: 8-2
Last Week's Record: 0-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 4, down one spot
What E. Carnes Says: Saturday's 20-point loss to Florida was ugly — the Aggies, struggling mightily on offense, went the first 8 minutes without scoring. Now A&M needs to win big over Rice on Thursday.

T5. Kansas St. Wildcats

Overall Record: 7-1
Last Week's Record: 1-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 6, up one spot
What Joe Says: Win over Bama was nice but this team still has major major issues scoring points which is not good in basketball at any level.

7. Oklahoma Sooners

Overall Record: 8-1
Last Week's Record: 1-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 7, same
What Evan Says: Oklahoma is the Tim Tebow of the Big 12. They might win ugly, but they keep winning. (I know, the Broncos lost on Sunday... I was there, but you get the idea).

8. Iowa St. Cyclones

Overall Record: 8-3
Last Week's Record: 1-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 8, same
What Nathan Says: The important thing is that the Cyclones didn't lose this week.

9. Oklahoma St. Cowboys

Overall Record: 6-4
Last Week's Results: 0-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 9, same
What Evan Says: Ok State is on a two-game slide and has a difficult test at Alabama on Wednesday.

10. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Overall Record: 5-4
Last Week's Record: 1-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 10, same
What E. Carnes Says: Jordan Tolbert continues to be the high point for the Red Raiders, adding 22 points and 7 rebounds in Tech's win 87-59 win over Grambling State. Texas Tech faces Oral Roberts, fresh from their Xavier blowout, on Thursday.

Really?

Do you honestly believe that there is any way to justify a 3 loss team with an undefeated team like Baylor? It’s ok (even if you’re a beaker) to say that Baylor is better than kU, considering they just got controlled yet again by a mid major. geeez.

btw.

Joe, you’re an idiot. Do you watch basketball?

I have to agree with you there. It is clear that KU is not on the same level as Baylor right now. They have one of the best front courts i have ever seen, decent guard play. If they can find a way to win consistently on the road i think they win the Big 12 this year. Kansas is lucky to be 3rd in the big 12 right now. I know this doenst really matter in the long run but take a look at where KU is in the Big 12 standings.

There's no excusing the Davidson loss, bad night all around.

But the other two losses were to pretty good teams. There’s a little thing called strength of schedule, I’d suggest you two look into it sometime.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

San Diego State? Northwestern?

One of those is the second toughest team Baylor has faced this year, not a lot to hang your hat on right now other than stomping horrible teams. No doubt Baylor is good and could win the title but lets slow down a touch until they beat a couple decent teams.

SOS

According to Sagrain, KU has the 20th toughest schedule in the country. Baylor and Mizzou are both 325+

Ok State is the only other B12 school with an SOS under 200. Full rankings:
Kansas ( 20)
Oklahoma State ( 74)
Iowa State ( 206)
Kansas State ( 221)
Oklahoma ( 223)
Texas Tech ( 265)
Texas ( 319)
Baylor ( 325)
Texas A&M ( 340)
Missouri ( 341)

What does this all mean? That we don’t really know anything until they start playing conference games. So like nattural says below, until we see the home and homes, and they start beating each other up, it’s all conjecture.

the fact that MU has covered every spread set accept their first one says a lot about if this team is good. I just think something has to be said about that a team has lost 3 games and probably should’ve have lost 4 had Sully played. They can be 3rd, it won’t hurt anyone

Mizzou has been hosed

They haven’t had the most difficult schedule in the world, but when you consider that they happened upon Nova and Notre Dame, both on down years, their SOS is affected. Nobody will remember ND had Arbomitus when they destroyed them. Either way, it’ll all work itself out, starting tomorrow vs Illannoy

You are just proving our point

How they played last night is eactly the reason they shouldnt be ranked first in the big 12. Until this team finds some leadership at the PG spot they will continue to be inconsistent. Ku has a very solid team and will still be top 3 in the big 12 and possibly go to elite 8 depending on their development. There biggest problem will be depth. This is the second game this season in which the bench has either not scored or only person scored. Just because they have a high SOS doesnt mean you all are best team in the conference or that you will win the conference. I guess we should just take the rankings of SOS and declare that the top 25 in the nation. As for Baylor, they just beat BYU on the road, BYU is not what they were last year but that is solid win. If you truely cant see that Baylor is the best team in the big 12 right now then i question your knowledge of the game. This is pointless anyway. We will find out the answers to all questions in couple weeks.

Yes we will.

Not sure how one game proves your point, but Baylor did beat an NAIA team last night. So BIG 12 Champs RAR!

Dude

They CRUSHED that NAIA team. Actually I don’t think it was a team, I think it’s just a guy named Paul Quinn who won some sort of raffle and got four of his buddies from the Y together to play against Baylor.

I have no idea but do they play PQ as favor?

Same religious sect or something? Otherwise I don’t fathom how they can justify scheduling an NAIA team in the middle of December. There are over 300 D1 teams, find one of those.

Not an elite 8 team to me..

I don’t see anything that will take kU to an elite 8.. mainly because self doesnt have the talent that he needs. he so regularly gets out-coached that im sure once again a mid major will come in and impose their will on this kU team. But yea they could win the big 12 no doubt, get a high seed and lose early.

Chill with the whole “i question your knowledge of the game” it’s so frustrating to hear people that think they’re all high and mighty, its just a forum. None of us get paid to do this..

How would either of you

rank the Big 12 as of now?

by Nathan Kotisso on Dec 20, 2011 1:25 PM CST via Android app reply actions

as of 12-21

1. Baylor
2. Mizzou
3. Kansas
4. Texas A&M
5. Kansas State
6. Texas ( on the move up if they can beat NC this weekend)
7. Oklahoma
8. Oklahoma State
9. Iowa State
10. Texas Tech.

As i said above this is just all just predictions and opinions. We will find out who the best team in the conference in a few weeks. Should be an interesting year with an 18 game schedule and everyone doing home and home series.

I just got really bearish on Texas after that Temple win.

I think Texas has developed quicker than anyone expected. They have some great young talent and are meshing better than what I thought they would at this point in the season. I cant wait for conference play to start so we can see who is truely the best team in the conference.
