Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings - Week 5
The Big 12 came off last week's tune-up against directional schools to knock off a handful of big name schools, highlighted by KU's win against Ohio State. Other tournament-caliber teams to fall: Villanova, Missouri State, Oral Roberts and Arkansas.
T1. Baylor BearsOverall Record: 7-0Last Week's Record: 0-0 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T1, same What Nathan Says: The hot name in the conference sits right behind them, but the Bears haven't given me any reason to bump them down. |
T1. Missouri TigersOverall Record: 9-0Last Week's Record: 2-0 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T1, same What Evan Says: Solid win against a bigger 'Nova squad last week. Two more tune-ups before the Busch Braggin' Rights game against Illinois.. |
3. Kansas JayhawksOverall Record: 7-2Last Week's Record: 2-0 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 3, same What Nathan Says: No shame in beating Ohio State without Jared Sullinger. Tyshawn Taylor's out for three weeks but KU has an easy slate of games until Big 12 play begins. |
4. Texas A&M AggiesOverall Record: 8-1Last Week's Record: 2-0 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 4, same What E. Carnes Says: Although they fared alright without Khris Middleton, the Aggies have to be happy to have their leading scorer back on the court. |
5. Texas LonghornsOverall Record: 7-2Last Week's Record: 2-0 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T5, same What E. Carnes Says: The Longhorns blew past UT-Arlington and Texas State, but the real test of the young team lies ahead — Texas plays Temple on Dec. 17 and UNC on Dec. 21. |
6. Kansas St. WildcatsOverall Record: 6-1Last Week's Record: 1-1 Last Week's Ranking/Movement: T5, down one What Joe Says: Wildcats had to go to overtime against North Florida which means K-State fans have to be happy there is still a football game left to look forward too. . |

god
seriously? have any of you watched any Big 12 basketball? how the hell does Iowa State get above OSU? and what has Texas done? Texas and Iowa State have NO quality wins or anything close to a quality win. OSU has lost to 3 NCAA tournament teams, and only one game wasn’t close. Texas has lost to 2 teams that will be on the bubble (one of them for sure) Iowa State lost to Drake. I repeat, DRAKE. they also lost to number 15 Michigan by 10 while Michigan dominated them. OSU lost to number 14 Pit by 6. and Texas above K State? K State has one loss and it was in overtime by 1 point to another NCAA tournament team and they have 2 wins against for sure NCAA tournament teams. I hope you guys realize that none of the teams Texas has beat are NCAA tournament teams. you guys have this all wrong, please get someone else to write this shit so it’s done right.
What then are your rankings?

OK
So, K-State and Texas are flipped in ours vs yours, which is essentially trivial at this point.
Your big disagreement with us is Ok State. You have them two higher than us. I can’t speak for the others, but I ranked Ok State 9th because they had a rough 4-game stretch in there (out of 9 games). OT vs UTSA, 15-pt loss to Stanford, scoring 57 in a loss to VaTech and scoring 59 in a win over Tulsa. Those are signs, to me, of a team that hadn’t found itself. Also Nash is still trying to piece together a complete game. I’m not saying they’ll be there at the end of the year, but now.. I feel that’s where they should be. Travis Ford agrees that they need to get better and haven’t really found themselves: http://www.stwnewspress.com/osusports/x60471356/Pieces-there-for-Oklahoma-States-mens-basketball-team-but-the-puzzles-fuzzy
I think that me moving Ok State down was more about me moving Oklahoma up. I’m really high on the Sooners right now, and needed to move them up. I also slid ISU above them. You can make a case that those could be flipped, but ISU went 2-0 last week and Ok State lost a game, so in the natural progression of things ISU rose and Ok State fell.

First let me start off my apologizing for being rude in my first post, caught in the moment. But I agree on a lot of those points, especially OU being better than expected but the reason I’ve put OK State higher is because of their non conference schedule compared to the others, it’s not as challenging as KU’s but I do think it’s the second toughest non conference in the Big 12 with KState close behind. And the only game they really let get away from them and stay away from them is that Stanford game (who I think is a very well rounded team). Overall I do agree OSU still needs to find themselves (and when they do they will be deadly) but even with what they have now and the teams they’ve played, they are still doing well and showing a lot of poise. They have a balanced team with inconsistencies.
But what do you think about this Texas team? Think they’re going down to Temple? (I do)
By the way, it’s nice to have the people who actually write this comment and continue a conversation with a reader, despite my rude comments in the first post. Thank you.
No worries
We all get excited about rankings (which is one reason we do it).
I think the underlying thing is that there are so many question marks in this conference this year.
- Can LBN reach his potential, and catapult Ok State?
- Can ISU’s transfers mesh?
- Can Mizzou win without height?
- Can Baylor win against a non-directional school?
- Can A&M score more than 50 pts in a game?
- Can KU replace all the talent they lost (not just Morris’ but also Reed and M’star)?
- Can Texas win with a young team?
- Can OU keep it up?
… and more.
We think we’ve found answers to a bunch of those questions (Mizzou can win, KU can replace etc) but until we see these teams play tough opponents day in and day out, we still won’t know. So this is all just conjecture until Jan 4 when we’ll be able to sort out contenders from pretenders. I always go back to ISU’s 13-3 start last year, then their 3-13 conference record. We were all high on the Clones until they faced B12 teams, then not so much. Who is this years ISU?

Different strokes, dude.
It’s always difficult to rank teams before conference play begins. One of the reasons I ranked Texas above K-State is that Texas is getting significant contributions from several players (Brown, Kabongo, McClellan, etc) while K-State seems to be pretty reliant on Gipson. Momentum is a factor for me, too. I feel like Texas looks stronger with each game while K-State looks less focused than they did a few weeks ago.
What interests me most are the three at the top, though. I’m dying to see how Baylor holds up with a tougher opponent.
Remember when we made our predictions in October
and we both said Baylor would go down to BYU? I don’t feel the same anymore, what about you?
Same here.
I’m expecting Baylor to win that game.
I definitely won’t be surprised if they lose to the first tough conference opponent they face, though. One of the perils of that ridiculous schedule!
Trap Game
Baylor might be looking at their next game against Paul Quinn and overlook BYU.
Is Paul Quinn just one guy? And who does he inbound to? Is that a pick-up game at the rec center? I’m confused.

I'll go
1. Mizzu
2. Baylor
3. Kansas
4. Kansas State
5. Texas A&M (terrible sos, but winning the games they should)
6. Texas (Jury is still out)
7. OSU (one of a few big 12 teams with a true road win)
8. OU (playing well, but we’ll see how they do on the road)
9. ISU (average)
10. TTU
I'd only correct...
4-9 could end up many different ways.
I haven’t counted out ISU yet. We can all agree there is talent there, right?
