Big 12 Conference Basketball Power Rankings - Week 9

Conference play began, so we are seeing the real teams emerge. Lots of movement this week.

1. Kansas Jayhawks

Overall Record:  18-0
Last Week's Record: 3-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 1 - No movement
What Matt Says: So when you're shooting 79.3% at the half on the road, things are going well.

2. Texas Longhorns

Overall Record:  14-3
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 2 - No movement
What Matt Says: Not one of those weeks that Texas will do much bragging about, but beating anyone on the road by 30 is an accomplishment.

3. Texas A&M Aggies

Overall Record:  16-1
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 3 - No movement
What Evan Says: Playing as well as anyone in the league/country. Were able to play uptempo ball and defeat Mizzou.

4. Colorado Buffaloes

Overall Record:  14-4
Last Week's Record: 2-0
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 7 - Up three spots
What Evan Says: Nationally they are surprising everyone. To Big 12 enthusiasts they are playing where we thought they'd be playing.

5. Missouri Tigers

Overall Record:  16-3
Last Week's Record:  2-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 5 - No movement
What Evan Says: The OT loss to A&M can be overlooked, as they had the ball with game in hand. The K-State victory might now just go down as a footnote.

6. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Overall Record:  13-4
Last Week's Record: 0-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 9 - Up three spots
What Joe Says: This team is definitely better this year, looked like for awhile they were going to be the team to end streak at Allen Fieldhouse.

7. Iowa St. Cyclones

Overall Record:  14-4
Last Week's Record: 1-1
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 10 - Up three spots
What Joe Says: Pounded Baylor at home, maybe best story in Big 12 this year.

8. Oklahoma St. Cowboys

Overall Record:  13-4
Last Week's Results: 0-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 4 - Down four spots
What Joe Says: Win at CU would have been big. Middle of pack team in Big 12 that could surprise on some nights.

9. Baylor Bears

Overall Record:  12-5
Last Week's Record: 1-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 6 - Down three spots
What Matt Says: Panic button pressed. Not sure why Scott Drew insisted on playing zone as long as he did. Not sure the Bears are tournament-caliber team after that embarrassment in Waco against the Jayhawks.

10. Kansas St. Wildcats

Overall Record:  13-6
Last Week's Record: 1-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 8 - Down two spots
What Joe Says: Got a nice win in scrimmage vs Tech but then back to normal with butt whooping at Missouri. Could be a possible NIT team.

11. Oklahoma Sooners

Overall Record:  8-9
Last Week's Record: 0-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 11 - No movement
What Matt Says: Well, the Sooners lost two conference road games. But think optimistically: they get Texas Tech at home this week!

12. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Overall Record:  8-10
Last Week's Record: 0-2
Last Week's Ranking/Movement: 12 - No movement
What Evan Says: Oy vey.

Love seeing these rankings...

Shows how incredibly pointless it is to rank teams before the season (or even the conference season) starts. Looks like the Big 12 will be losing two of its basketball heavyweights after all.

Huge conference game Saturday...

between Texas and KU. You would think KU would have the edge, playing at home. But it will be the best opponent KU has faced this season. And Texas has shown the ability to win on the road against better competion than KU has even played yet.

Huge game.

Yeah, I probably overstated it a bit.

Should have just said “Texas has shown the ability to win on the road against high-quality teams” and left it at that.

Still, it’s a huge game for both teams. I think Texas is the team that is most likely to challenge KU for the Big 12 title because 1) they are pretty darn good and 2) they play in the south which means they play a weaker conference schedule than any north team will play.

Texas has a tough home game against A&M first though.

I don't know.

Arizona got absolutely slaughtered by BYU when the Cougars went into a collapsible zone that could shut down Derrick Williams. They also have 0 quality wins. I see them as sort of like Maryland out of the ACC (good team in bad conference with dominant post player and terrible guards). MSU is better, even if they aren’t living up to our lofty expectations.

The comparison to Maryland is probably apt.

They’re a bit underrated too. Kenpom rankings:
12 BYU
14 Maryland
20 Arizona
25 Michigan St.
29 UNC

And BYU is damn good.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
