Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series Tally: Saturday Edition

Big 12 - 6
Pac-10 - 2

Well, the Pac-10 finally got on the board at the Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series with wins today by the Washington Huskies over the Texas Tech Red Raiders and by the California Golden Bears over the Iowa State Cyclones. The Colorado Buffaloes salvaged the only win for the Big 12 on the day, beating Oregon St.

California Bears - 76
Iowa St. Cyclones - 73

To the surprise of many, Iowa State started the season 6-0 but are now in the midst of a two game losing skid after losing to Cal Saturday afternoon.

The Bears started out hot establishing an early 10 point lead, before the Clones fought back to nearly even the score at 39-38 at intermission. The Clones kept it close throughout the second half and had the ball with five seconds to play but couldn't get off a potential game-tying three before the buzzer sounded.

Scott Christopherson led the Cyclones with 25 points, sinking seven three pointers. Jake Anderson added 16 and Diante Garrett pitched in 11 in the loss. Melvin Ejim and Anderson each had a team high nine rebounds.

The Bears were paced by four players in double figures as Harper Kamp, Markhuri Sanders-Frison, Jorge Gutierrez and Allen Crabbe each scored over 10 in the game. Kemp also led the Bears in rebounds with a game-high 10.

Washington Huskies - 108
Texas Tech Red Raiders - 79

While the upper echelon Big 12 teams have had trouble with the lower Pac-10 schools -- KU, K-State and Mizzou won by a collective nine points -- Washington (5-2), the only ranked Pac-10 team in the AP Top 25, had little trouble taking out Texas Tech.

Justin Holiday led the Huskies with 20 points, 17 coming in the first half, and nine rebounds. Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Isaiah Thomas added 18 and 16, respectively, for the Huskies.

The Red Raiders (5-4) got 19 points from Brad Reese. John Roberson and David Tairu each contributed 14 in the loss. Mike Singletary led the Red Raiders with 9 rebounds, but was held to only six points.

Colorado Buffaloes - 83
Oregon St. Beavers - 57

I wrote on SB Nation Denver that Cory Higgins and Alec Burks were great players, but they needed the supporting cast to step up in order to succeed. Well, welcome to the show Levi Knutson, Marcus Relpohrde and Austin Dufault.

Knutson scored a game-high 22 points for the Buffs and Relphorde and Dufault added 12 each in support of Burks' 15 and Higgins season low 9.

Jared Cunningham led the Beavers with 16 while Lathen Wallace and Joe Burton contributed 14 and 10, respectively.

A complete schedule of the entire Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series, including scores of completed games is available after The Jump.

Pat Knight needs to be gone.

If they’re this bad now, no reason for him to be around. I’ve seen nothing that says they’ll turn it around and there’s no reason to believe he’s going to make them better next year.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Midseason firings...

Quin Snyder is the only coach I can think of who was “fired” midseason. Is there another I’m missing?

New AD

Texas Tech’s AD, Gerald Myers, is retiring in May. A search has begun for his replacement, but I don’t think anything will happen until a new AD is hired. Gerald Myers played and coached basketball at Texas Tech University; so I don’t think he wants his last act to be firing the basketball coach…that task awaits the new AD.

So you agree they need a new coach?

Pat Knight

said before the year that this was an “extension or get fired” year. He went on to say that he felt the team was capable of making the NCAAs. If they can accomplish this, he felt he had earned an extension. If they didn’t, he wouldn’t blame the school for firing him. He put a lot of pressure on himself by coming out and saying this at the pre-season presser, but some believe he had already received this ultimatum behind closed doors.

If this is true, based on Tech’s play thus far, I think a new coach is on the way. Additionally, a new AD may like to put their stamp on the program anyway. So I would be surprised if the new AD were to retain Coach Knight.
