Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series Tally: Thursday Edition

Big 12 - 4
Pac-10 - 0

The heart of the Big 12 / Pac-10 Hardwood Series got underway on Thursday night as three games pitted the two conferences against each other. The Big XII played host to two of the games, as the Arizona St. Sun Devils visited the Baylor Bears and the UCLA Bruins traveled to Allen Fieldhouse to take on the Kansas Jayhawks. In the third games of the evening the Oregon Ducks played host to the Missouri Tigers.

Baylor Bears - 68
Arizona St. Sun Devils - 54

In the first game of the evening, Baylor easily handled the Sun Devils as LaceDarius Dunn led all scorers with 24 points. A.J. Walton chipped in 13 and Perry Jones added 12 and a team high four assists for the victors. Anthony Jones led the Bears in rebounds with 8.

The Sun Devils were led in points and rebounds by Rihards Kuksiks who accumulated 13 and six. Ty Abbott contributed 12 in the loss.

Kansas Jayhawks - 77
UCLA Bruins - 76

In what was supposed to be a pounding by KU turned into a ball game as UCLA played well above their heads, almost upsetting the Jayhawks in Lawrence. The Bruins were leading well into the second half, but Tyshawn Taylor and Marcus Morris led a Jayhawk surge that put the Jayhawks ahead for good. UCLA had a chance to tie the game up with 19.6 seconds remaining but Lazeric Jones was fouled on the floor and missed his first free throw attempt of the season, leading to a jump ball and KU possession. After a KU turnover, Tyler Honeycutt nailed a three (ala Georgetown vs Missouri) with four seconds remaining. As time expired Mario Little was fouled by Malcolm Lee and sunk the first of two to ice the game.

Taylor and Tyrel Reed led Kansas with 17 pts while Morris added 16 and brother Markieff Morris had 9. Little led the Jayhawks in rebounding with 7.

For the Bruins, Honeycutt ended with a game-high 30 points, followed by Joshua Smith's 17. Smith also led in rebounds with 14.

Missouri Tigers - 83
Oregon Ducks - 80

College football fans would have loved this match-up, as it would have pitted number one versus number 14. Well, this wasn't football and the way it begun had fans wishing it were. Up 22 early, the Tigers squandered the lead and the Ducks made a game out of it, pulling within four with a 48 seconds remaining. Two threes by Johnathan Loyd, surrounding two Michael Dixon free throws brought the Tiger lead to two. A Matt Pressey free throw with five seconds remaining sealed the game as Loyd missed a desperation three for the tie.

Big 12 Hoops Player of the Week Marcus Denmon led the Tigers with 19 points and seven rebounds. Kim English may have found his shooting stroke pouring in 12. Laurence Bowers tied Denmon for the team lead with seven boards.

E.J. SIngler, brother of Kyle Singler, led the Ducks with 19 points and nine rebounds. Three players -- Joevan Catron, Jay-R Strowbridge, Loyd -- added 15 each in the loss.

It's what everyone is talking about. Thoughts?

Foul or no foul on UCLA at end of game. Me personally I didn’t think it should have been called and feel bad for UCLA players to lose in that manner. I still think KU wins in OT but UCLA should have been given a chance after playing that hard for 40 minutes.

It was a foul...

Now should it have been called? In a tie game? At the waning moments? On a desperation shot?

I say no.

As I said at Rock Chalk Talk last night,

I don’t call that. Not on a desperation shot with less than a second. But I’m also a huge believer in things evening out over the course of a season (and normally a game), so don’t bitch when they go against you and don’t gloat when they go for you.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball...Rock Chalk Talk

Tigers...

as stated in an earlier post, Miguel Mejia didn’t bother staying up for this one. The NBA on TNT took up all of the allotted hoops time for the evening. But, Miguel is very much looking forward to their next game, against Vanderbilt.

Evan says thanks Migel

I am too

Last night, the tigers lost any gas they had left. I am very impressed with this team by play 7 games in 14 days. Multiple time zones, thousands of miles. 7-0 would have been great, but 6-1 is good, with the loss coming to a very good G’Town team

Great moments are born from great opportunity.

The argument for 5+ wins...

is that the Bruins and Ducks both held close to the upper tier of the Big 12. Can some of the other teams lose?

LOVE IT!

If CU wins tomorrow which column are they in? Would the Pac-10 get a win and a loss?

Buffs vs Beavers

The real winners are those of us who don’t have to watch this game.
