Big 12 Basketball Conference Power Rankings - Week 1
1. Kansas St. WildcatsOverall Record: 4-0Last Week's Record: 4-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 1 - No movement What Joe Says: While not every win was the prettiest the Wildcats have beaten two ranked opponents in their first four games. Next up #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils. |
2. Kansas JayhawksOverall Record: 3-0Last Week's Record: 3-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 2 - No movement What Matt Says: The Jayhawks have obliterated their early opponents: the Longwood Lancers, Valparaiso Crusaders, and North Texas Mean Green have lost by a combined 285-189. But feasting on cupcakes is easy. |
3. Baylor BearsOverall Record: 4-0Last Week's Record: 4-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 4 - Up one spot What Matt Says: The Bears survived LaceDarius Dunn's suspension, but it wasn't always pretty. Have one of the most dynamic frontcourts in the country with Perry Jones and Quincy Acy. Dunn put up 24 in his return. |
4. Texas LonghornsOverall Record: 3-1Last Week's Record: 3-1 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 5 - Up one spot What Matt Says: Texas notched a very impressive win against the Illinois Fighting Illini at the 2k Classic, and they took a top 5 Pittsburgh Panthers team to the last possession. Far from perfection but looking very hot right now. |
5. Missouri TigersOverall Record: 2-0Last Week's Record: 2-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 3 - Down two spots What Evan Says: Mizzou looked horrible in their win over Western Illinois Leathernecks, but rebounded nicely in a 38-point win over North Florida Ospreys. They will get better. Not there yet. |
6. Texas A&M AggiesOverall Record: 3-0Last Week's Record: 3-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 8 - Up two spots What Evan Says: The Aggies have played two teams that share their name, Texas A&M-CC and Texas A&M-Int. Still need time to really determine how good they are. |
7. Iowa St. CyclonesOverall Record: 4-0Last Week's Record: 4-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 12 - Up five spots What Joe Says: Things couldn't have started out better for Fred Hoiberg and company. A nice win over former coach Greg McDermott and his Creighton Bluejays, guessing that one was celebrated in Ames. |
8. Oklahoma St. CowboysOverall Record: 3-0Last Week's Results: 3-0 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 9 - Up one spot What Joe Says: A good start to the year for OSU. Still yet to fully know about this team until competition level increases. |
9. Oklahoma SoonersOverall Record: 3-1Last Week's Record: 3-1 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 11 - Up two spots What Matt Says: Oklahoma gave the Kentucky Wildcats a game in Maui. No, they didn't come out with a victory, but Jeff Capel's squad doesn't look nearly as lost compared with a year ago (they started 2-3 with horrendous losses). |
10. Texas Tech Red RaidersOverall Record: 3-1Last Week's Record: 3-1 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 7 - Down three spots What Evan Says: Tech has played some patsies, yet hasn't looked good in any win. The loss to North Texas was damaging. |
11. Nebraska CornhuskersOverall Record: 3-2Last Week's Record: 3-2 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 10 - Down one spot What Joe Says: A loss to Vanderbilt can be tolerated since it's an SEC oppenent but losing to Davidson shouldn't be accepted. The Cornhuskers need to improve quickly or face yet another year in the cellar of the Big 12. |
12. Colorado BuffaloesOverall Record: 1-2Last Week's Record: 1-2 Preseason Ranking/Movement: 6 - Down six spots What Evan Says: The loss at Georgia wasn't so bad. The loss at San Francisco was inexcusable. |
Biggest Gain: Iowa State, up five spots
Biggest Loss: Colorado, down six spots

KU was (and is) my pick to win Big 12
but for purposes of power ranking at this junction, I think KSU earned #1 slot with win against Gonzaga. We’ll see how good Gonzaga and Virginia Tech turn out to be in the end but right now it’s wins against two ranked teams.

even if they're not ranked,
North Texas, Longwood, and Valpo are decidedly worse teams. I don’t think there’s any way to bump Kansas up much without them beating someone.
Did not expect Colorado to be this bad, but Burks/Higgins have zero help.
Dunn’s return flew under the radar last night with CBE classic/Maui inviational going on. Nice game for him.
Yeah really disappointed in CU
I was one of the people who probably should have known better about them but I thought they would have a good year.

you and me both
I have watched their two losses and it is unbelievable how bad they shoot at the start of games.
Also, Higgins is shooting like 30%. He needs to step it up. Last place is the right place for them right now.
